چکیده

An ion beam has been measured emerging from a low pressure 0.04 Pa helicon plasma reactor over a narrow range of magnetic field values 1 mT B0 3 mT . The presence of the ion beam occurs simultaneously with a large increase in the plasma density for the same applied magnetic field, produced using a single solenoid half the length of the m=1 rf antenna. The peak central plasma density of 1.5 1017 m−3 is measured to be almost 15 times larger than that occurring before or after the increase, and is associated with a steep axial density gradient which follows the gradient of the magnetic field. During this low magnetic field transition the antenna power transfer efficiency is measured to increase from less than 10% to 50%, suggesting some form of localized bulk electron heating in the source region associated with the helicon wave. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3381093

Helicon Source for Ion Propulsion

Electric thrusters are usually in one of two forms: gridded ion thrusters or Hall thrusters. Each of these accelerates ions and requires an injector of electrons to neutralize the ion beam. Ambipolar thrusters eject neutralized plasmas with equal numbers of ions and electrons. Helicon thrusters are a new type being developed which utilize both the high ionization efficiency of magnetized helico...

High source potential upstream of a current-free electric double layer

Large plasma potentials sup to ,80 Vd are measured upstream of a current-free electric double layer generated in a helicon rf argon discharge for a constant rf power of 250 W sat 13.56 MHzd and for low operating pressures s,2 mTorrd using an electrostatic ion energy analyzer. The energy of the Ar+ ion beam formed by acceleration through the potential drop of the double layer is found to be stro...

An experimental investigation of alternative propellants for the helicon double layer thruster

Ion energy distribution functions are measured using a retarding field energy analyser located 7.5 cm downstream of a helicon double layer plasma source, respectively, operating with four molecular gases: nitrogen (N2), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O). For radiofrequency powers of a few hundred watts, and a magnetic field diverging from about 0.013 T (130 G) in the source t...

Helicon discharges and sources: a review∗

Helicon waves are waves in low-temperature, partially ionized plasmas in a dc magnetic field (B-field). The study of helicons involves both ion–neutral collisions and Larmor orbits, even when the B-field is uniform. Helicon discharges are ionized by helicon waves generated by a radiofrequency (RF) antenna. Interest in helicon discharges arose because of the high plasma densities they generate c...

RFEA Measurements of High-Energy Electrons in a Helicon Plasma Device with Expanding Magnetic Field

In the inductively coupled plasma of the Njord helicon device we have, for the same parameters as for which an ion beam exists, measured a downstream population of high-energy electrons emerging from the source. Separated measurements of energetic tail electrons was carried out by Retarding Field Energy Analyzer (RFEA) with a grounded entrance grid, operated in an electron collection mode. In a...
